In Cambridge, wherever you look, history looks back at you. It's hardly surprising considering the University of Cambridge has 85 Nobel Laureates, 14 British Prime Ministers, nearly 100 Olympic medallists and countless other cultural and academic luminaries amongst its alumni. Look through a window in Trinity College and you will see the former home of Isaac Newton; look through another and you will see Prince Charles’ room!
The University of Cambridge was founded in 1209 by scholars who were fleeing retribution in Oxford for the alleged murder of a local woman. Cambridge quickly flourished and grew to become one of the most respected academic institutes in the world. As well as its breath taking beauty, the city is set against a patchwork of historical events that shaped the way the whole country developed. It's here, in Cambridge, that Lord Raleigh first explained why the sky appears blue and Isaac Newton developed the mathematical techniques which now dominate nearly all branches of science, design and production. It is also home to the invention of the computer, and further to that, the branch of science that we now use to run them developed by Alan Turing. In one of the city's oldest pubs Watson and Crick proclaimed they had discovered "the secret of life" - the structure of DNA. Charles Darwin unravelled the story of evolution, and Lord Byron, Rupert Brooke, Christopher Marlowe, William Wordsworth and many more were all busy writing away.
Many of the country’s most powerful monarchs founded beautiful Colleges here, and the city has preserved these outstanding buildings over the 800 years since the university was founded (despite Oliver Cromwell stationing his troops here inside King's Chapel, as head quarters during the civil war!). And all this makes up just a tiny bit of Cambridge's history. Cambridge is one of the most historically significant towns in the modern world, and it continues to impress to this day.
